Why the surface comes before the shoe

Grass is soft and slippery, so a football boot needs studs that sink in and hold. A hall floor is smooth and dry, so an indoor football shoe needs a flat, grippy rubber sole that does not mark the surface. A mountain path is uneven, wet and rocky, so a trekking boot needs deep lugs, a stiff midsole and a high collar that protects the ankle.
Buying by color or by brand ignores this. Buying by surface does not. If you run mostly on pavement, a trail shoe with aggressive lugs will feel slow and wear fast on the road. If you play football on grass in halowki, you will slip. If you hike in running shoes, your feet will feel every stone.

What are the types of sports shoe and what is each one for?
Running shoes divide by surface. Road running shoes are for asphalt and packed paths. Trail running shoes are for dirt, mud and rock. Track shoes are for a synthetic track and carry spikes. Each has a different outsole pattern, a different stack height and a different weight.
Football shoes divide by surface too. Korki, the Polish word for boots with studs, are for natural grass. Halowki, the Polish word for indoor football shoes, are for halls and artificial surfaces. Between them sit turf shoes, with many small rubber studs, for artificial grass.
Trekking boots divide by load and terrain. Light hiking shoes suit day walks on maintained trails. Mid-cut boots suit multi-day walks with a pack. Full mountaineering boots suit snow, ice and steep rock.

What running shoes should you choose for asphalt?
For asphalt, choose a road running shoe. Look for a smooth rubber outsole with a shallow tread pattern, a cushioned midsole and a heel-to-toe drop that suits your stride. The shoe should feel light enough to run in and stable enough to land on.
Asphalt is unforgiving. It returns almost no energy and it wears rubber quickly. A road shoe uses denser rubber in the heel and softer rubber in the forefoot to balance durability and grip. A trail shoe uses sticky rubber and deep lugs, which is the wrong tool for pavement: it wears flat and feels vague underfoot.
Fit matters as much as the outsole. Measure your foot at the end of the day, when it is largest. Leave a thumb's width between your longest toe and the front of the shoe. Check the width: a shoe that pinches the sides will cause blisters on a long run, no matter how good the cushioning is.
If you run on both road and light trail, a road shoe with a slightly deeper tread is a reasonable compromise. If you run mostly on one surface, buy for that surface.
How do korki and halowki differ?
Korki and halowki differ in the outsole and the surface they are built for. Korki have fixed studs, usually plastic or metal, that press into grass and give traction on soft ground. Halowki have a flat rubber sole with a fine tread pattern, designed for smooth indoor floors and artificial turf.
On grass, halowki slide. The flat sole cannot bite into the surface, so you lose grip when you turn. On a hall floor, korki are dangerous: the studs do not sink in, they skate, and they can mark or damage the floor. Using the wrong one is not just uncomfortable, it is a risk to your ankle and knee.
A third type, turf shoes, sits between them. They have many small rubber studs and work on artificial grass, where long studs would catch and twist the knee. If you play on artificial surfaces, turf shoes are often the better choice.
Fit for football is close but not tight. The shoe should hold the foot without squeezing the toes. Leather uppers stretch a little; synthetic uppers do not. Try both if you can.
What shoes should you choose for a mountain trail?
For a mountain trail, choose a trekking boot or a hiking shoe that matches the load you carry and the terrain you cross. A light hiking shoe suits a day walk on a marked trail. A mid-cut boot suits a weekend with a pack. A stiffer boot suits rocky ground, snow or long descents.
The sole is the key. Deep lugs grip mud and loose stone. A stiff midsole supports the foot on uneven ground and protects it from sharp rocks. A high collar supports the ankle, which matters when the path is rough and your pack is heavy.
Waterproofing helps in wet conditions but reduces breathability. For summer day walks, a breathable shoe may be more comfortable. For wet, cold or multi-day trips, a waterproof membrane is worth the trade.
Break boots in before a long walk. Wear them on short walks first. A boot that fits well in the shop can still rub on a long descent if the lacing is wrong or the heel is loose.
How to decide in the shop
Start with the surface. Say out loud where you will use the shoe: asphalt, grass, hall floor, mountain path. That single answer removes most of the options.
Then check the outsole. Smooth rubber for road. Studs for grass. Flat rubber for halls. Deep lugs for trails. If the outsole does not match the ground, put the shoe back.
Then check the fit. Measure both feet, since they can differ. Try the shoe at the end of the day. Walk or run a few steps. Check the heel hold, the toe room and the width. A good shoe disappears on your foot; a bad one announces itself with every step.
Finally, ignore the label. A shoe is not better because it is expensive or because a professional wears it. It is better if it matches your surface, your foot and your use. That is the whole method, and it works for running, football, hiking and everyday wear alike.
