A paddler who capsizes in open water gets back in by one of three routes: a self-rescue such as a paddle-float re-entry or a roll, a assisted rescue where a companion stabilizes the boat, or a re-entry that uses the kayak's own buoyancy and the swimmer's body position. The method matters less than the practice, because cold hands and a loaded deck change what is possible. How do paddlers get back into a sea kayak after a capsize?

The answer depends on whether the paddler is alone and whether the kayak still has its cockpit flooded. A sea kayak with sealed bulkheads floats even when full of water, so the first job is to keep hold of the boat and the paddle, then decide which rescue fits the situation.

A paddle-float re-entry is the standard solo method. The paddler inflates or attaches a float to one blade, extends the paddle across the kayak behind the cockpit, and uses it as an outrigger. With one hand on the paddle shaft and the cockpit rim, the swimmer kicks and pulls the torso onto the rear deck, then slides forward into the seat. The float keeps the kayak from rolling while the body weight crosses the deck. This works in calm water and with a tired swimmer, but it is slow and exposes the paddler to the wind for a minute or more.

A roll is faster but requires a reliable eskimo roll and a paddle that has not been lost. The setup is the same as in a pool: tuck, sweep, hip snap. In cold water the shock can make the first attempt fail, so a second and third attempt should be part of the plan rather than a surprise.

Assisted rescues are usually quicker when a group is present. In a T-rescue, the rescuer lines up perpendicular to the capsized kayak, lifts the flooded bow onto their own deck, and the two boats form a T. The rescuer then rocks the flooded kayak to drain it, or the swimmer holds the bow while the rescuer pumps. Once most of the water is out, the swimmer re-enters over the side or the stern. A side-by-side or heel-hook rescue is similar but keeps the boats parallel, which is easier in choppy water.

Two details decide whether any of this works. The first is a cockpit that can be emptied: a hand pump, a bailer, or a sponge, plus a paddle float that is actually attached to the deck rather than buried in a hatch. The second is a spray skirt that the paddler can release by feel. A skirt that has to be seen to be opened is a hazard in a capsize.

What gear does a touring kayak carry, and how is the load distributed?

A touring kayak carries three categories of gear: safety equipment, personal equipment, and camping or travel equipment. The safety list is short and non-negotiable: a personal flotation device worn, not stowed, a spray skirt, a pump or bailer, a paddle float, a spare paddle, a tow line for group paddling, a compass, a chart or map in a waterproof case, and a light for low visibility. A marine radio or a phone in a waterproof pouch belongs on the deck or in a pocket, not in a hatch.

Personal equipment includes clothing chosen for immersion rather than air temperature, a hat, gloves, sun protection, water, and food within reach. Camping equipment, if the trip is an overnight one, includes a tent, sleeping bag, mat, stove, fuel, and food for the number of days planned, with a margin.

The distribution rule is simple: heavy items low and near the center, light items at the ends. The kayak's bulkheads divide the hull into compartments, and the paddler should aim for a slight stern-down trim, because a bow that is too light will be pushed around by wind and a bow that is too heavy will bury in waves. Water and fuel are the heaviest consumables, so they go in the day hatch or under the seat if the boat allows it. The tent and sleeping bag are bulky but light, so they fit forward of the footrests or behind the seat.

Two checks are worth doing before launch. First, lift the kayak by the cockpit rim and see whether it balances near the middle; if it does not, move weight. Second, open every hatch and confirm that nothing needed for a rescue is inside one. A tow line under a hatch lid is not a tow line.

How do wind, current and cold water shape a paddling plan?

Wind, current, and water temperature are the three variables that turn a route into a plan. Wind is the most visible. A forecast of 10 knots is not the same as 10 knots on the water, because fetch, headlands, and the kayak's own freeboard change the effective load. A headwind on the return leg is the classic trap: the outbound paddle feels easy, and the return takes twice as long. The plan should assume the return leg is into the wind unless the forecast says otherwise.

Current is less visible and more consequential. In a channel such as the Ă–resund between Denmark and Sweden, current can run at a knot or more, and it can reverse within a few hours. A paddler who plans a crossing without checking the current table may find the return leg impossible, not merely slow. The rule of thumb is to paddle the first half of a crossing against the current if the tide or flow will turn, so that the second half carries the boat home.

Cold water is the variable that changes the rescue plan. Water below about 15 degrees Celsius (59 Fahrenheit) is cold enough to impair a swimmer's grip and breathing within minutes, and water near 10 degrees Celsius (50 Fahrenheit) shortens useful action time further. A capsize in cold water is not a swimming problem, it is a time problem. That is why the re-entry method should be chosen before launch: a roll that works in a pool may not work with numb hands, and a paddle-float re-entry that takes two minutes in calm water may take longer in a chop. Dress for the water, keep the rescue gear on the deck, and treat the first cold-water capsize as a drill rather than a test.

What should a crossing plan contain before launch?

A crossing plan is a short written list, not a mental note. It should name the route, the distance, the expected time, the turnaround time, the forecast wind and its direction, the current or tide state at the start and the midpoint, the water temperature, the group's rescue roles, and the bail-out points along the way. A plan that cannot be said out loud in a minute is too long.

The plan should also name the conditions that would cancel the trip. A small-craft advisory, a wind against current situation, fog, or a group member without a working spray skirt are all reasons to stay ashore. The decision to cancel is easier when it is written down before the day begins.

How should a paddler prepare for the first cold-water season?

Preparation is mostly repetition. A paddler who has practiced a wet exit and a re-entry in a pool or a sheltered bay will find the real event less disorienting. A course, a club, or a supervised session gives the repetition a structure, and it puts a second person in the water to check the technique.

The rest is gear discipline. A paddle float and pump should be reachable without opening a hatch. A spray skirt should be releasable by feel. A radio or phone should be on the body. And the first crossings of a cold season should be short, close to shore, and planned with a clear turnaround time. The goal is not to avoid a capsize; it is to make a capsize a routine event rather than an emergency.
