What Clubs Should a Beginner Golfer Carry

So you have finally taken the plunge and decided to learn golf!

Congratulations, it is a great sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It can be a little daunting starting out, especially when it comes to what clubs should a beginner carry.

As a beginner golfer, you should carry a driver, set of irons, pitching wedge, and a putter. The driver is used for tee shots, the putter is used for putting, and the irons are used for approach shots. You’ll also want to have a bag to carry your clubs in and some golf balls. As you get better, you can add more clubs to your bag, but these are the essentials.

I remember my first set of golf clubs. It was a used set of Wilson irons that my friend gave me as he bought a new set.

They served me well and I still have them today as a memento of my early days in golf.

What Are the Different Types of Golf Clubs

If you are just starting out, I would recommend buying a used set of clubs. You can find them at garage sales, online, or at a local sporting goods store.

Used clubs are a great way to get started without spending a lot of money.

Once you have your clubs, hit the driving range to get a feel for them. Don’t worry about trying to make perfect swings, just focus on getting comfortable with your new clubs.

As you get better, you can start taking lessons from a local pro.

Driver

Most beginner golfers think the driver is the most important club in the bag. The driver is used for tee shots, which are the longest and hardest shots you’ll hit. It’s important to have a good driver, but it’s not the be-all and end-all of your game.

For a while, I thought my driver was the most important club, too. I would spend hours at the driving range trying to hit it further and straighter. But no matter how hard I tried, I always seemed to slice (hit the ball to the right).

One day I went out with a friend who is a much better golfer than me. He didn’t hit the ball any further than me, but his shots were always straight. That’s when I realized it’s not all about hitting the ball as hard as you can.

Fairway Woods

You will notice that most golfers don’t carry a lot of fairway woods. That’s because they are not used very often. Fairway woods are used for long shots when you can’t reach the green with an iron.

They have a large head and a long shaft, which makes them easier to hit than drivers.

They are one of the most difficult clubs for beginners to hit, which is why you don’t see a lot of them in beginner golf bags. But as you get better, you may want to add one or two to your bag.

The most common fairway woods are the 3-wood and the 5-wood.

Hybrids

Hybrids are a cross between iron and fairway wood. They have the head of a fairway wood and the shaft of iron. Hybrids are easier to hit than fairway woods, which is why they are becoming more popular.

They are a great option for beginners who are having trouble hitting their fairway woods. I remember when I first started playing, I could never hit my 3-wood. But when I got a hybrid, it was like magic. Suddenly I could hit shots that went straight and long.

If you are having trouble hitting your fairway woods, I recommend getting a hybrid. You’ll be glad you did.

Irons

The irons are a set of clubs used for approach shots. They come in different lofts, which is the angle of the clubface in relation to the ground. The higher the loft, the more distance the ball will travel.

Most beginner golf sets will have 5 – 9 iron and a pitching wedge in their golf bag. These clubs will get you out of most situations on the course. When I first started playing golf, these were the only clubs I carried.

Initially, I thought, much like with the driver, that hitting the ball harder would make it go further. It took me a while to realize that, actually, it was the loft of the club that determined how far the ball would travel.

Wedges

The pitching wedge is a high-lofted iron used for shorter shots around the green. It has a loft of around 46 degrees, which is higher than most other irons.

As a beginner, you won’t use the pitching wedge very often. But as you get better, it will become one of your most-used clubs. I use my pitching wedge from within 100 yards of the green.

For a while, I only had one pitching wedge and used it for all my approach shots. It wasn’t until I took a lesson from a pro that I realized I needed to have different clubs for different situations.

Now I have a 54-degree wedge for shots around the green and a 60-degree wedge for bunker shots. These two clubs have drastically improved my short game.

Putter

I would say that you use your putter more than any other club in the bag. It’s the only club you use on the green, and it’s used for nearly half of your shots during a round.

As a beginner, it’s important to have a putter that you’re comfortable with. If you don’t have one, I would recommend going to a local golf shop and trying out a few before you buy.

When I first started playing golf, I would use whatever putter was in the bag. But as I got better, I realized that a comfortable putter can make a big difference in your game.

I was using bladed putters, which are smaller and have a thin face. But I found that they were difficult to control. So I switched to a mallet putter, which is larger and has a wider face. This style of the putter is much easier to control, and it has helped me lower my scores.

How Many Clubs Should a Beginner Golfer Carry

According to USGA rules, a golfer can carry a maximum of 14 clubs in their bag but as a beginner, you won’t need that many clubs. I would recommend carrying around 10 – 12 clubs to start.

As you get better, you can add more clubs to your bag. But it’s important to not get too carried away. You don’t need the newest and most expensive clubs to play well. In fact, I’ve found that too many clubs can actually be a hindrance to your game.

I used to carry 14 clubs in my bag, but I found that I never used all of them. So I downsized to 10 clubs, and it has made a big difference in my game. Rather than spending money on a brand new set of clubs I recommend investing in golf lessons.

I learned a lot from my lessons with the golf professional, and one of the most important things was how to select the right clubs for my bag. He showed me which clubs I should keep in my bag to improve my game.

Full Set of Clubs vs Individual Clubs

If you’re just starting out in golf, I would recommend buying a set of clubs. This will give you everything you need to start playing, and it will be cheaper than buying individual clubs. But if you decide to buy individual clubs, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, make sure that the clubs are the right length for you.

Second, the shafts of the clubs should be made of graphite. This material is much lighter than steel and will help you swing the club faster. Finally, make sure that the clubs have the right amount of loft for your game.
